What is the main conflict in the story? List 3 events that have been part of the conflict, and explain how they contributed to the conflict. The main conflict in the story so far is probably Scout not knowing how to control herself, which is disappointing to Atticus. One event that has contributed to the conflict up to this point is Scout beating somebody up at school, specifically a boy. At school this boy was spreading about Atticus. He spread rumors that Atticus loved colored people, which wasn’t accepted or okay in times like these. As soon as word got around to Scout, she promptly found the boy and beat him some sense into him at school. Another event that contributes to the main conflict so far in the book is when Scout beats up another boy. This time she beats up her cousin on Christmas at her Aunt’s house in the backyard. Her cousin Francis also called her father a lover of colored people. I suppose it’s a sensitive subject in Scout’s mind and probably in Atticus’s too. The last event that may have contributed to the conflict would have been when Atticus, who is a lawyer, decided he would defend a colored person in a court case. Atticus is one of the good people in the world at this time and won’t judge based on a skin color or race. Everyone judges the people who support colored people in these times. This means that they judge Atticus. The only thing that bothers Scout is that people say things to her. She just ends up not being able to control herself and just starts to hit people and she just gets extremely angry. She would even beat her own cousin for saying stuff like that. Like I said, it’s probably just a soft spot. She wants to protect Atticus because maybe she feels that she has to. Maybe in her mind, there has to be somebody to protect Atticus, and if not Jem, then her. Blog Post #2
Who in your opinion is the most dynamic character in the story so far? Explain how 2 events in the story have changed them. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the most dynamic character would have to be Jeremy Atticus Finch, otherwise known as Jem. He seems to have changed the most since the book has started. In the beginning of the book Jem was kind of shoved into the background and was really only around to entertain his little sister Scout. Jem didn’t necessarily mind, I mean, he only had to in the summer and he enjoyed playing around with her. Sometimes she acted more like a boy than a girl. Jem was always playing around with scout and doing the same things everyday until that summer when Dill came. I think Jem’s big change over these chapters was parting from his sister a little bit. When you’re in the fifth grade and your sibling has just started in the first, you don’t want to hang out with them at school around your friends. That’s kind of what Jem’s doing. He won’t associate with Scout at school but they walk home together and hang out at home and every other time. The first thing that caused Jem to change would be Dill coming every summer. You see, Dill and Jem are both older than Scout so when Dill comes, Jem doesn’t want to hang around Scout nearly as much as he did. I know from personal experience that when you’re hanging out with your friends, you don’t really want your sibling tagging along everywhere you guys go. Sometimes it’s annoying, as much as you love them. One of the other things that happened to Jem to change him would be Scout starting the first grade at his school. In the book, Jem even told her not to hang around him at recess and lunch. I would assume he only told her that because he would be hanging around with friends. He specifically tells her not to hang around him, embarrass him, tell people things about his personal life, or talk to him or his friends. In my opinion, that wasn’t very nice of him but it’s a sibling thing I suppose. Blog Post 1:
What does the phrase “Coming Of Age”mean to you? To me, the phrase “Coming of Age”means growing up and learning how to do thing on your own. There are times when you just have to grow up and do things. There are certain times in life when you have to do some growing up, like when you start middle school. You can’t let people baby you anymore and you have to start taking responsibility for your actions. When you start high school, you need to mature and grow up even more than in middle school and be even more responsible for you actions and pass things in on time. For example, my brother wasn’t passing in his work and wasn’t taking any responsibility for his actions. Eventually he started failing his classes and now he has to make up two of his english credits. He matured and is staying after school twice a week to make up the credits so he can actually graduate. There are many times in your life when you have to grow up, like when you move out and you have to find a house, a job, be able to pay for things like heat, water, groceries, and appliances. Also losing a family member or close friend causes you to mature by dealing with their death or maybe they went to war and won’t be back for a couple of years, if at all. Maybe in when you’re in your first relationship as a younger middle school kid rather than in high school. You’d still have to grow up to be able to handle it and to be able to confront people about problems and be able to tell your parents if something or other isn’t going right. When you get a job when you’re older, you’re going to have to be able to confront people, tell them whether or not they’re doing they’re job right. It can really improve your people skills. |
